Growing older in a life plan community like Friends House offers so much to seniors.  At Friends House Retirement Community our residents have many choices in their daily lives. While they remain engaged with family members and lifelong friends, they also enjoy personal hobbies, and participate in shared activities.

Friends helping friends has been a way of life at Friends House for over 60 years.  Residents in all stages of care, from independent living to the nursing home, reach out to help when their neighbors need assistance.  The free rides program, for example, offers trips to doctors’ offices provided by volunteer residents who drive. And the Friends House “ride on” bus gives residents the opportunity to go shopping or just spend an afternoon out and about.  Trips on the bus to the Dollar Store are especially popular in Assisted Living.

When residents find that they need more help with day-to-day living, they can choose to age in their own home at Friends House with help from a specialized care company such as CarePlus.  Friends House retirement community partners with several excellent agencies providing in-home care.  For seniors who find it too taxing to maintain an independent living house or apartment, the Friends House Assisted Living community offers worry-free specialized care in Haviland Hall.

Tailored Care and Support:

Friends House personalized care and support services are highly rated, earning a 5-star facility rating by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  The dedicated staff in assisted living and skilled nursing areas work closely with residents and their families to create individualized care plans. These plans take account of the resident’s unique needs and preferences. Residents benefit from services like medication management, assistance with daily tasks, coordination of healthcare services, physical and occupational therapy, organized creative activities, and entertainment programs.  Friends House care and support services reach across the whole campus, emphasizing choice, dignity, and community.

An Active and Engaging Lifestyle:

Friends House encourages an active lifestyle throughout all phases of aging. A wide range of activities and programs are available to residents, including fitness classes, social events, crafts workshops, discussion groups, educational lectures, feature films, and cultural outings in the Sandy Spring and Washington D.C. area.

Personal Interests and Hobbies:

Friends House Retirement community encourages residents to pursue their individual interests and personal hobbies. Our library, art room, and gardens are places where resident volunteers share their passions and expertise with each other. Our nearly 2-acre garden, with its shady pergola for casual visits in good weather, is accessible to residents in walkers or wheelchairs.  Some raised beds make it easier for seniors to plant, weed, and harvest in their allotted garden space. No green thumb required to join in!

And let’s not forget the Elephant Shop, where more than 15 volunteers open the store on Tuesdays and Thursdays to accept donations of pre-loved merchandise and offer all manner of treasures at very low prices.  The neighbors who volunteer in this thrift shop love the experience of hanging out at a social hub where everyone welcomes customers and donors from all parts of Friends House and the wider Sandy Spring community.

Social Connections and Community Engagement:

All of the residents of our community are members of the Friends House Seniors Association.  The Association has over 30 volunteer committees, ensuring that residents have plenty of options for social engagement.  Committees coordinate funding and support for gardening, environmental stewardship, evening programs, tours to museums and historic sites, information technology, art-making and art-displaying, woodworking, and much more.  Residents who join one or more of these committees need never be lonely.  Friends help Friends; our community comes together in fun and laughter. At Friends House residents are surrounded by friends who become like family.
