Charles is a partner in a Washington, DC law firm, practicing intellectual property law. Previously, he was a materials engineer at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission initially working on the safe 10,000-year disposal of spent nuclear fuel and subsequently researching safety of advanced reactors.
A graduate of Sandy Spring Friends School, Charles boarded on the Friends House campus during his year at the community house ninth grade.
Charles is a member of Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting. His parents moved to Friends House about 20 years ago.
Charles has served in all executive positions on the board of his condominium association, the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, the American Society of Materials, and was treasurer of the Clearview Flying Club during a crucial stage of building financial sustainability for perpetuity. In these leadership roles he has strongly focused on environmental quality and sustainability.
Jill Clements holds a BA in Russian Studies from the University of Virginia, and an MBA from Widener University in Pennsylvania. She is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources management. During her career she has served as HR director for Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, for Excela Health System and the Latrobe Area Hospital, and most recently for the City of College Park, Maryland (2008-2020).
Jill has volunteered in service to numerous organizations, including the Prince Georges County Literacy Program, the Rotary Club of Ligonier (PA), the Westmoreland/Fayette Counties Workforce Investment Board, and the United Way of Westmoreland County.
After ten years at National Institutes of Health as a social science analyst, Judith Farquhar earned masters degrees and the PhD in anthropology from the University of Chicago. Her research specialty is the social and cultural significance of traditional Chinese medicine in modern China. One of the five books she has published considers the ways that Chinese city-dwellers nurture their lives in retirement.
Judy retired to Friends House after 35 years of teaching medical anthropology, comparative health systems, and China studies at the University of North Carolina and the University of Chicago, as well as in Beijing, China. In all these positions she took on major administrative responsibilities.
Her parents spent their last years at Friends House; Judy and her family have been friends of Friends House since its founding. Presently she is a resident in independent living, co-manages the Elephant Shop, and serves as recording clerk for the Board and clerk of the Advancement Committee.
Dr. Robert Fields has been a member of the local community since opening his internal medicine practice in Olney in 1987. He admitted patients to Friends Nursing Home for 34 years, visiting them regularly and overseeing their medical care.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Fields served in numerous capacities at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, including Chairman of the hospital’s Credentials Committee and Ethics Committee. He was a member of the Medical Executive Committee and later a member of the hospital’s Board of Directors. He retired from private practice in 2021.
Born in California, Dr. Fields obtained his B.A. in History at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his M.D. degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and maintained lifetime Board Certification in Internal Medicine. He enjoyed his long relationships with patients, often caring for their parents, children, and grandchildren, and he particularly enjoyed making house calls and seeing his patients when they were hospitalized.
Dr. Fields has lived in Montgomery County with his wife Ellen, a retired pediatrician, since 1984. His interests include spending time with his grandchildren, travel, and cooking.
Tom Gibian served as Head of School at Sandy Spring Friends School from 2010 to 2020. Prior to being Head of School, Tom was the founder and CEO of Emerging Capital Partners, which grew to be the largest private equity manager focused on the African continent.
Tom began his career in finance at Salomon Brothers in New York and Goldman Sachs, including a three-year assignment as co-Director of Project Finance for Goldman Sachs Asia.
Tom grew up in Sandy Spring and his parents lived at Friends House for many years. He currently serves as the Clerk of the Friends House Board.
Tom has been a board member on companies listed on the NYSE and NASDAQ, and he currently serves as a Trustee of the College of Wooster, E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, DC, Sandy Spring Friends School, and the New Venture Fund. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of Friends Committee on National Legislation.
With 15 years of experience in Medical and Surgical Oncology and Hospice care, Sonia E. Harris has devoted her career to providing compassionate care to patients in the greater Richmond, VA area.
Before entering the nursing field, she worked in the finance industry as a credit loan officer and manager, where she honed valuable leadership and organizational skills.
Now semi-retired, Sonia continues to serve her community by coaching track and volunteering. She is an active member of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, Inc., a professional organization of Registered Nurses, and she contributes her time and expertise as a member of the Friends House Board of Directors.
A graduate of Hampton University and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, she remains passionate about helping others and making a lasting, positive impact on those around her.
John is a longtime resident of Montgomery County, having lived in Sandy Spring for almost 25 years. He attended McDaniel College and received an MBA from The George Washington University.
John brings marketing and management experience from his more than 20 years as CEO and Chief Instigator of Envision EMI (1987–2008), an internationally recognized educational travel program provider. From 2011 to 2018, John was a Partner at Outdoor Venture Group, where he oversaw marketing and sales strategies for what has become the nation’s largest forest climbing enterprise.
John is currently the owner and manager of The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring. In addition to serving as Treasurer for the Friends House Board, John is the Board Chair of Visit Montgomery, the county’s destination marketing organization.
David Jones graduated from Earlham College and the University of Wisconsin, both with degrees in geology. He worked in the energy industry in Texas for 13 years.
In 1992, David returned to Chester County, Pennsylvania, and began work for The Kendal Corporation, a not-for-profit, Quaker organization that builds and operates retirement communities.
David retired in 2020 after serving Kendal for 28 years as Project Director and Vice President of Development for new projects. While at Kendal, David supported the Friends House New Project Committee, and he joined the Friends House Board shortly after retirement.
David currently serves as Clerk of the Governance Committee.
Christine Lucas brings extensive experience in public health and social work to the Board of Directors. She is retired from service as an epidemiologist at the CDC with a Ph.D. in Social Work from The Catholic University of America, specializing in research methods and social welfare policy.
Her expertise spans project management, survey research, public health administration, and social justice.
Christine has managed health programs internationally, living and working in Uganda and South Africa. Since 2018, she has served as an adjunct professor at The Catholic University of America, teaching research methods with a focus on diversity and ethics.
A Quaker since 1992, Christine is a long-time member of Adelphi Friends Meeting, where she raised her two children.
Charles McCullough is a law enforcement and intelligence official. He is an attorney who served as the first Inspector General of the United States Intelligence Community.
Prior to his Senate-confirmed appointment to that post in 2010, he occupied various positions in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the National Security Agency, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Chuck retired from federal service in 2017, entering private practice as an attorney. He lives in Anne Arundel County and was a long-time member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol.
Chuck and his sister were for many years the principal caregivers for their mother, who had Alzheimer’s disease. He is an experienced user of home care services.
Laura Miyoshi has over 45 years of diverse professional experience, with a strong background in hospitality operations, technology, and administration. She spent 10 years honing her expertise in food and beverage management within hotel operations, followed by more than 15 years in hospitality technology, focusing on business development, support, and product development.
Laura concluded her career with over 21 years at Sandy Spring Friends School, where she excelled in operations management, demonstrating exceptional leadership in physical, fiscal, and strategic administration. Her accomplishments include significant work in construction management, physical plant oversight, risk management, contract administration, and strategic planning.
Throughout her tenure, Laura developed strong connections with the Sandy Spring community, including Friends House, Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting, and the Sandy Spring Museum.
Now retired, Laura enjoys spending time with her wife, Lori, traveling, visiting extended family, and taking her dog, Mochi, on afternoon walks.
