Enjoy Unparalleled Programs & Activities Offered By Your Neighbors

Residents at Friends House Retirement Community do it their way, with resident-run and self-governed programs and committees. Self-funded by profits from our Elephant Shop, the Friends House Seniors Association engages residents in volunteer self-governance. Together our community chooses and refines diverse activities and causes to emphasize as part of a campus culture of volunteering and mutual care.

On any given afternoon at Friends House, residents might be taking calls for our free rides program, picking fresh fruits and vegetables from our organic garden, or sharing creative projects with nursing home residents through our Montessori Inspired Living Program.

Here are just some of the many committees and programs our residents organize as volunteers.

  • The Wellspring Artists group exhibits work at local shows
  • The Decorative Arts program selects, purchases, and displays many of the artworks exhibited on campus
  • The Gardening Committee joins resident and non-resident Master Gardeners to manage many specialty garden plots and holds seasonal plant sales
  • The 1,500-book Library is located in the heart of our campus. It supports Book Clubs and lively discussion groups.
  • The Program & Tours Committees offer on-campus lectures and entertainment, and encourage residents to sign up for planned trips to concerts, plays and sites of interest in the region
  • An Active Aging Committee offers resources for senior health and organizes a variety of exercise classes
  • Volunteers act as dispatchers to arrange ttransportation for neighbors as part of the Free Rides program
  • The Mindfulness program practices meditation in the Thich Nhat Hahn tradition
  • “The Pickups” donating their time to collect trash and debris along our adopt-a-road stretch of Norwood Road
  • The Montessori Inspired Lifestyle Program volunteers engage meaningfully with residents in Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing

The care my sister received was AWESOME! She had a terminal illness and was kept clean, up out of bed, dressed and socially engaged as long as possible. The CNAs, nurses, caretakers were kind and caring … I would recommend to anyone living in the area to consider Friends House.

This is without a doubt one of the finest facilities a person could ask for. They have everything you need to exist. The staff goes out of their way to accommodate you. The restaurant facilities are outstanding. And maintenance is always there when needed.

Our family has had a mom, two aunts, and now another aunt living at Friends House in different stages of care. This is an amazing place, and the care is exceptional.

Living very far away, it is so comforting to know that my mother has the high-quality care of their skilled nursing facility, as well as the support of the community. I love to visit and always make new friends amongst the residents. So many interesting, engaged elders.

The grounds are lovely (fruit orchards), and it has great apartment living for independent living Low key, casual laid back living in a great location.
