Marilyn Briggs has called Friends House home for eight years, but her connection to the community began more than five decades ago. Here’s her story:
“I’ve lived at Friends House for 8 years. However, I’ve known for more than 50 years that Friends House was where I wanted to spend the ‘winter’ of my life. I was part of a group from my church that came here to perform for residents way back then, and I was so impressed by the sharpness of the audience and the questions they asked us, I decided then and there that I’d move here when the time came.
I’ve been involved in managing the Elephant Shop, and on the Finance Committee, as well as helping out with the Free Food program– which organizes food that is donated by local grocery stories. I help out in the nursing area as needed at times, too. Technically, I go to work every day!
I can’t say enough good things about everyone who works here. Friends House would be nothing without these dedicated employees. We aren’t allowed to tip any of them. So I’ve been one of those behind the Employee Appreciation Fund which collects funds at the holidays to distribute among the staff. I feel strongly about that.
Has Friends House met my expectations? Absolutely–and even beyond. There is a welcoming family-like feeling here. I really wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
